An interview with Chol Gyu Lee, a participant in the second cohort of “CIRCULAR STARTUP TOKYO,” has been published on the online platform “Circular Economy Hub,” which focuses on circular economy topics.

After earning a PhD in agriculture with a focus on soil science, Lee spent over a decade conducting research in the fields of agriculture and the environment in academic institutions. He has also been engaged in both higher education and public outreach. While working at a company specializing in microbial research and development, Lee proposed an urban upcycling concept for compost. In this interview, Circular Economy Hub spoke with him about the inspiration behind his idea and his journey toward turning it into a business.

Creating urban compost outlets with planter kits and education

Harch Inc., the operator of Circular Economy Hub, runs the “CIRCULAR STARTUP TOKYO” program, a startup incubation initiative focused on the circular economy. The program is part of the FY2023 cohort of “TOKYO SUTEAM,” a Tokyo Metropolitan Government initiative supporting startups through cross-sector collaboration.
